A bus technician was presented with a top award in front of national representatives from the bus industry at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge last week.

Master technician David O'Hara, 31, from Chorley, alongside his team-mate Peter Buckle, 53, from Sherburn-in-Elmet, represented FirstGroup in May at the IRTE Skills Challenge.

Aimed at the technicians who repair and maintain the country's buses, the competition saw teams from across the UK slog it out in a series of technical challenges designed to discover the best bus engineers in the business.

At last week’s winners’ presentation, David and Peter took home the Runner-up Mechanical and Electrical Award, beating technicians from across the UK for the title. David said: “We work as a team on a daily basis so it was good to test that teamwork in a competition, but were totally surprised at being awarded the runners-up spot.”

Peter Lewis, Lead Auditor UK Bus for competing operator FirstGroup, said: “This competition is a fantastic opportunity for the bus industry to demonstrate the quality of our people.

“It reflects on our investment in training and accrediting our technicians across FirstGroup UK Bus by the development of our internal mobile training facility and it’s good to see the benefits being delivered.”
