50 new allotments set for Adlington

PLANS to create 50 new allotments on a piece of disused land in Adlington are moving a step closer with a planning application due to be submitted shortly.

In response to increasing demand from residents Chorley Council invested £40,000 last year to help create a number of new allotment sites and it’s hoped green-fingered residents will be able to move onto the new site later in the summer.

The land, which is off The Common, in Adlington, will be divided up into around 50 plots with half of these for residents local to the area should permission be granted.

Councillor Eric Bell, who is responsible for the development of allotments at Chorley Council, said: “There is a huge demand for allotments in Chorley which is why we have spent a lot of time and effort to try and identify a number of new sites that we can develop right across the borough.

“We have had some setbacks along the way with some of the sites proving to be unsuitable but we are now in a position where we can apply for planning permission to develop this particular one.”

work is still on-going to create allotments at a number of other places including Manor Road, in Clayton-le-Woods and Duke Street, in Chorley, but The Common looks like it will be the first of the sites to be offered to people on the waiting list.

“We have already consulted with local residents about The Common and from their feedback we will be keeping an existing well-worn route through the site to a pond and the plans include provision for car parking off road so there is no inconvenience to local residents,” said Councillor Bell.

The council will be submitting a planning application in the next few weeks and if approved work would start straight away on site with the plots taking about two weeks to develop.
