Chorley group banned from bringing home-made cakes to meetings

A decision to ban a Chorley women’s group from taking home-made cakes to their own coffee afternoon has been branded as “absolutely ridiculous”.

The retired ladies of the Adlington and District Millennium Committee like to bake for their fundraising events, which they had previously held at community centres.

When they booked the local library for their latest get-together on Friday afternoon they were stunned when council chiefs stepped in on health and safety grounds and ruled that only shop-bought cakes and biscuits could be offered.

The villagers of Adlington, Chorley, have flocked to the committee’s outings to reminisce over the past as they tucked into a homemade chocolate cake or a piece of shortbread.

In return they were asked to make a donation to a nominated charity, with Friday’s beneficiary being Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group has now vowed to not use Adlington Library again as they are reduced to providing packets of biscuits for visitors.

Committee member Ann Shires said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous.

"I just think it’s over the top, even my nine-year-old granddaughter is always saying ‘Oh grandma, it’s health and safety’.

”We have all these elderly people who come along to these things and love having a chat to each other over a nice cup of tea and a piece of cake. Many of them don’t bake themselves any more so this is a real treat for them.”

Mrs Shires is well versed with health and safety as she worked for the British Safety Council up until the early 1980s.

She said: “There was more of an emphasis on industry back then. We were more concerned about health and safety in the workplace.

"We don’t get many children at our events so if a grown-up with an allergy wants to know what the baking ingredients are then they can just ask.”

Julie Bell, head of Lancashire County Council’s Library and Information Service, said: “We do everything we can to support the important work of community groups, including providing venues for meetings.

"However, we do not have kitchen facilities where food can be prepared and - though we know home-cooked baking often tastes better than the commercially prepared kind - legal restrictions mean we can only allow packaged goods with clearly labelled ingredients.”

Julie Bell is the sort of dead wood you could remove from the council wage bill and help towards the budget cuts.

Julie Bell is the sort of deadwood that should be removed from the gene pool, never mind the council wage bill!

It's not possible to remove anyone from the gene pool: study genetics if you're not convinced. Much as I may want to show that an anagram of 'Julie Bell' is 'Bleeding Idiot', I am short of a few letters. Julie is presenting what we may expect is her public face: her private face, hinted here, is for her intimates.

There are a lot of health and safety myths, so much so that the HSE web-site has a secition dedicated to myth busting, Judith Hackitt CBE, who is the HSE Chair stated in 2008 that " We do not prohibit the sale of cakes at charity fetes". I am guessing she is refering to home made cakes!

Once again, someone from a local authority putting their foot in their mouth by not understanding regulations.
.
The Food Labelling Regulations do not apply to loose sold goods, or those not sold as part of a business. Nor are kitchen facilities required for the sale of pre-prepared food for such events.
.
The long and short of it is that Julie Bell, or whoever has advised her, is wrong. The regulations she assumes apply do not.
.
No wonder people are upset about council budgets if this is the kind of nonsense spouted by these officials.
.
Mind you, if the LT had any journalists worth their salt, they could have found this out and made this in to a PROPER story about local authority incompetence, rather than a soft story about cakes.

There's one more 'jobsworth' for the firing squad! There was a similar incident here 3 yrs ago where the county health lady actually poured
bleach over the sandwiches on sale at
a local event since they had been home
made and the kitchens were not subject
to inspection. The volunteers who'd made them had been doing so for 25 yrs. Public protest led to a reprimand
from the Ontario government, but the
'Bleach Lady' still has her job.
This incident was of course, a power-
trip, and it's getting worse -- especially
as our kids become indoctrinated.
We need to purge out these eejuts!

This story says everything about the stupidity of decisions taken on the grounds of H&S. This sort of thing is like a cancer creeping insiduously through the fabric of our society. H&S is necessary to protect people but it has to be based on rational and practical decisions.

Can we not ask for the publication of this 'bleeding idiot's' home address - or at least enough of her work details - so that we may mount a forceful, rather nasty corrective campaign? Perhaps someone dislikes her enough? She appears to be one of those hubris-deluded types. The press will know. Please consider telling the rest of us.
