Work is under way to add the names of all the fallen from the town to the war memorial in Astley Park.

The work, which is part of the Chorley Remembers project to improve the town’s memorials, will see 741 names engraved on a new wall behind the Celtic Cross.

It will also see a general refurbishment of the area, close to the Park Road entrance, with the other memorial stones repositioned into more prominent locations.

The civic war memorial in Astley Park was first unveiled in 1924 and the idea of adding the names of the fallen has been around for some time.

The redevelopment has been made possible thanks to the many people who responded to the appeal for names of the fallen from conflicts ranging from the two World Wars through to Korea, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, the Falklands and Afghanistan.

Chairman and co-founder of the Chorley Remembers Project, Lindsay Hoyle MP, said: “We thought it was only right that all those who have given their lives in conflict are individually recognised on the memorial.

“A lot of work has gone into finding and researching all the names and it will be a fitting tribute for them and their families for years to come.”

The work is due to be completed in early November in time for Remembrance Sunday.

It is part of the wider work of the Chorley Remembers project, which has already seen an upgrade of the Chorley Pals memorial site and will also include a permanent exhibition down at the Astley Hall complex and restoration of the memorial arch at the entrance to Astley Park.
