Adlington Community Centre to be powered by solar energy

A community centre, built more than 100 years ago, is to be powered by solar energy after having panels fitted.

Adlington Community Centre moved towards sustainable energy after doubts were raised about the future viability of the centre, due to ever increasing utility costs.

The Community Centre Committee decided that the best way to reduce electricity bills was to fit solar panels and chose Solar King of Eccleston to install 39 x 250 watt panels, on the south facing roof.

Anne Fairclough, from the centre said: “Around 75 per cent of the electricity generated will be used ourselves, with 25 per cent going back into the grid.

“We are hopeful that using our own energy and the money from the feed in tariff will more than cover the current electricity bill of £3,000 per year.

"It will help keep our hire charges attractive enough to make full use of this excellent facility.”

55 per cent of the installation cost was met from a grant from the Lancashire Environmental Fund, together with a contribution from Lancashire County Council.
