ARSONISTS have destroyed a play area at a nursery in Blackburn.

Police have launched an investigation after the play shed at the Higher Croft Children's Centre was completely burnt to the ground.

The shed at the Fishmoor Drive nursery was bought as a result of a community fundraising effort.

And now bosses at the nursery have said that it will cost hundreds of pounds to replace.

Councillor Maureen Bateson, executive member for Children's Services, said: "I am absolutely disgusted with this mindless destruction.

"The people who did this should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves especially as the play house was bought with money raised by the local community who worked tirelessly to organise events.

"It is this kind of mindless vandalism that we should all speak out against."

Fire crews from Blackburn Fire Station attended the incident at around 7.15pm on Thursday.

Five firefighters tackled the blaze, which had engulfed the wooden playhouse completely destroying it.

Staff discovered the damage on Friday morning and police were alerted.

The centre was extended and refurbished to offer children's centre services and activities after receiving almost £35,000 from the Eric Wright Trust in 2006.

Improvements were also made to the outdoor play area at the centre, which was officially opened in January 2004 by Blackburn MP Jack Straw.

The centre, which caters for 65 children aged up to five, has a busy community cafe.
