A project to help a community grow its own food has been launched in Coppull.

The scheme, based on the Longfield Avenue estate, has been set up by residents and children at the Longfield Community Hub.

Support for the project is coming from Lancashire Wildlife Trust, Greenhouse Sensation, Chorley Borough Council and Chorley Community Housing (CCH).

The initial idea for the communal food growing project at the rear of the community hub came from local resident and chair of the residents group Jay Bishop.

CCH Resident Involvement Officer Charlie Barlow said: “Jay convinced other adults on the estate that growing your own produce with your children could not only be enjoyable, but could also help to beat rising food costs. The meeting was really positive and the group has now decided they would like to go ahead and get started.”

Staff from Greenhouse Sensation gave children entry forms for the Big Veg Challenge, which will allow the children to receive a free veg growing starter pack. Sarah Turner from the Wildlife Trust will be working with the residents to get the project started and will provide two training sessions.

Jay Bishop said: "I think the communal food growing project is an excellent way to bring people of all ages together from the local community. The residents group committee will work hard to promote the project to local residents. Our future vision would be to open the project up to people living in properties in the areas surrounding Longfield Avenue".

The next meeting of the group has been arranged for Wednesday, May 4 at 6.30pm at the Longfield Community Hub.

This meeting is open to all local residents and anyone wanting to come along should contact Billy Roberts on 01257 244853.
