A FAMILY'S anguished month-long search for a missing Burnley grandmother has ended in tragedy.

Susan Gray, 55, vanished from her Allerton Drive home on November 9 after scribbling a note to her family saying 'sorry, I can't let you see me like this any longer. I know I've got Alzheimers.'

Her body was found by police on a stretch of the railway embankment close to Brougham Street, Burnley, yesterday.

Police were today overseeign a post mortem examination to discover the cause of death but are not treating her death as suspicious.

The mum-of-four had been suffering from severe anxiety and before leaving home with no money, belongings or medication.

But her symptoms did not match Alzheimers, which her father suffered from.

Today, her grieving family thanked everyone for their help and support during the search effort.

Her children had put posters up all over Lancashire, travelling as far as Blackpool, as they searched daily for their mother.

In a statement, her family said: "During this difficult period of time family, friends and the local community, have all provided us with much needed support."

Mrs Gray was born in Burnley and went to school at St Mary Magdalene' and St Hilda's. She was married to Jimmy and the couple had four children Anthony, 35, Tanya, 23, Lisa, 22 and Kerry, 21.

During the appeal, Lisa said her mum had been a 'bubbly and outgoing' person but her personality had changed over the past ten months following the death of her mother.

She did not work but nursed her father and then mother as well as looking after her three grandchildren George, Zane and Georgia.

She was a member of Classic World of Fitness, Parker Lane, Burnley and enjoyed going for facials at Poppies in Hargreaves Street as well as trips to Blackpool.

Mrs Gray's body was found by British Transport Police during a search of the railway embankment close to Brougham Street, Burnley.

Police had previously spent five hours searching a stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, close to Burnley Barracks, between Westgate and the M65.

Det Insp Sam Birtwell said: "Our thoughts go out to the family of Mrs Gray who have been assisting us with the search for Susan for over three weeks now.

"We would like to acknowledge the efforts they have made to assist us in locating Susan in terms of distributing posters and assisting with media appeals, sadly to no avail."
