Musical youngsters at a family day centre are putting the X Factor to shame with a new CD launched on Monday.

Shayne, Brenda and Journey South beware! More than 30 children, aged five and under, from SureStart Preston West Children's Centre, sang their little hearts out for the Nursery Rhymes CD, which features popular favourites like I'm a Little Teapot, Incy Wincy Spider and the Grand Old Duke of York.

The CD was co-ordinated by speech and language therapist, Cath Bumbac, who came over from her native Romania on a work placement.

The CD, recorded at the Tanterton Christian Centre, in Ingol, was designed to make learning fun, and to help the youngsters develop their speech before they go to school.

Lucy Hamilton is nursery nurse at the SureStart centre, which supports more than 50 children and their families every week.

She said: "It's a great idea and Cath did a great job. It was a real joint effort, we had lots of parents helping us and the response has been terrific."

Donna Lee, 32, of Ainsdale Drive, Ashton, whose children Rebecca, nine, Katie, four and Thomas, 22 months, took part in the recording, attended the launch and listened to the CD for the first time.

"I think it's lovely to be able to listen to it," she said. "My kids certainly had a great time on the day and the work they do here at SureStart is just brilliant. Thomas loves it and he's been dancing around this morning."

Parents and children flocked to the centre in Ainsdale Drive, Ashton, on Monday to listen to the new compilation which has an accompanying sing-a-long book.

The first copy of the CD is free to all families registered with the centre and £3.50 for any additional copies. All proceeds will go to the centre.
