Sir Tom Finney will be reunited with former team mates at a special event at Deepdale to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society.

The Evening of Nostalgia with Sir Tom Finney and the Legends of Football event, will be held at the Great Room at Preston North End's Deepdale ground, on March 9, next year.

Players expected to attend include former North End players, Tommy Docherty and Peter Higham, and also some of those Sir Tom played against during his career including former England greats, Nat Lofthouse and Sir Bobby Charlton.

It will be a poignant night for Sir Tom whose wife Elsie died last year aged 81 after suffering from the disease for several years.

He said: "Elsie died six months before our 60th wedding anniversary from Alzheimer's and I really miss her.

"She was absolutely first class and when I was in the thick of my career as a footballer and later in business she always stood by me."

He added that many former footballers are struck by the disease because of the number of times they used to head the ball which was a lot heavier than the modern football.

At the event fans will be given an opportunity to probe a panel of players about their glory days.

They will also be able to bag themselves a piece of footballing history at a Memorabilia Fair at the football club, held on Sunday, March 5, where a variety of items, including match worn shirts, scarves, programmes, annuals and autographs, will be on sale.

Sir Tom, who first joined his home town club as a 15-year-old amateur in 1937, said: "I'll be able to catch up with a lot of my old friends that I've not seen in a long time. It's for a good cause and I'm really looking forward to it."

Organisers, IntoFootball.co.uk, are appealing for fans to donate their own pieces to the Memorabilia Fair to try and raise as much money as possible for people who suffer from Alzheimer's.

You can donate by taking them to PNE and marking it for Sir Tom's attention or by calling 01253 729254. Tickets cost £75 available on 01562 887323.
