A PENSIONER died from an infection after complications during hip surgery, an inquest heard.

Mildred Young, 85, of Farnfield Drive, Burnley, had desperately needed the hip replacement to give her a better quality of life.

But while the surgery at Gisburn Park Hospital on February 3 was a success she suffered an infection and was later admitted to Burnley General Hospital where she died on April 17.

Consultant Adhita Saikin and pathologist Dr John Rutherford both said it was impossible to say where the infection came from or when it occurred.

Dr Rutherford said the pensioner had a vulnerable heart and the infection from the hip had spread to her heart and killed her.

He added that it was no reflection on the surgical procedure and infections can occur even during the best care.

Coroner Richard Taylor recorded a verdict of death by misadventure because the surgery, although needed to improve the pensioner's life, was not life-saving.
