POLICE today warned pensioners to be on their guard against two pickpockets who are targeting the elderly.

The warning comes after a brave 76-year-old man managed to fend off two men trying to take his wallet as he attempted to board a bus at Nelson bus station.

Officers said the thieves attempted to distract the victim by dropping a pound coin on the floor while the other offender attempted to take the pensioner's wallet from his pocket.

The Nelson man grabbed the thief's arm to stop him making off with his wallet while the other offender attempted to pull him over. They escaped empty-handed.

In a similar incident on Friday, an elderly man with Parkinson's Disease was distracted by two men using the same technique who then made off with his wallet containing £100.

Sgt John Fryer, of Pennine Police, said: "We would warn elderly people to be on their guard when getting on a bus and be aware of anyone acting suspiciously.

"These people seem to be targeting vulnerable people at this time of year which is despicable. The elderly need their money especially at this time of year.

"They need extra money to pay for heating and want to buy Christmas presents for relatives." The first incident happened on October 30 but was only reported to police earlier this week.

The first offender is white, 6ft, broad build with large hands, at least 30 years old, wearing a dark blue or black woollen hat with dark curly hair and a dark blue three-quarter length jacket.

The other man is slim, thin face, 5ft 4ins, in his 20s to early 30s, has short combed back fair hair with a parting, wearing a light blue denim jacket and jeans.
