OUR Sports editor Neil Bramwell has been named the North West sports journalist of the year.

And that completes a remarkable double for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

For former sports reporter Brian Doogan, who has moved on to a national newspaper, won the same award last year.

This year's category in the BT sponsored competition was judged by BBC presenter Steve Rider.

He said: "Neil is equally at home leading campaigns, unearthing exclusives and penning pithy match reports.

"His output in column inches is impressive in both quality and quantity.

"Yet he manages to combine writing duties with those heading the sports department where, when he's not churning out the words, he can be found subbing and page designing. Phew!"

Neil received a cheque for £350, a framed certificate and a trophy at the awards ceremony held at Lancashire County Cricket Club.

He will now be competing in the BT UK national awards for the regional press in London in June.
