YOUNGSTERS from St Mary's Hall, Stonyhurst, visited the First World War battlefields of the Somme and Ypres.

They visited the graves of former Stonyhurst College pupils whose lives were lost in the landmark battles.

Two former pupils buried in Knightsbridge Cemetery are Frederick O'Neill and Patrick McCusker of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

The youngsters were accompanied by First World War historian Kieron Taylforth, of Hurst Green.

The party also visited the graves of Aloysius Bolton and John Tomlinson, who came from Hurst Green and were killed at Ypres. Also killed at Ypres was Lt George Archer-Shee, the original "Winslow Boy," who had attended Stonyhurst College and was only 19 when he died.

St Mary's Hall spokesman Jonathan Hewat said the trip was very moving, as it was the first time the graves of the two former Hurst Green men had been visited in over 80 years.
