WOULD-be chefs at a school in Radcliffe are planning to whip up a frenzy in the kitchen, when they take on other schools in the Junior Masterchef competition.

The event, organised by the Rotary Club, will see eight teams from across Bury battle it out to present the best culinary creation. And youngsters from the west campus of Radcliffe Riverside School will be at their workstations next Tuesday with their spoons, pans and scales at the ready.

Louise Brunins (14), of Little Lever, and Natalie Farrar (15), from Radcliffe, were chosen to represent the Abden Street school. They will be making lemon pepper chicken for the main course and banana and lemon cake for the dessert.

They will have to buy all their ingredients for the two-course meal for four on a budget of £15, and will have two hours to create the meal.

The final will be held in the kitchens of Bury College, in Market Street, and will be judged by a panel of experts. One of last years judges was well-known local chef Andrew Nutter.

Radcliffe Riverside Schools food technology teacher, Mrs Gillian Cockerham, said she had wanted a team from the school to take part for years, and last year gatecrashed the final at the college, to find out more about it!

She said: "The girls were chosen to take part from around eight entries at the school after they entered application forms to take part. We are having a practice run beforehand to make sure they know what they are doing, but I am sure they will do well and enjoy it. Its wonderful that they have made it to this stage. I am very proud of them."

Louise has already had a dummy run with her mum at home, cooking the lemon chicken dish.

She said: "It went all right and I hope it will be all right on the day for the competition too. I am looking forward to being in the final but I am nervous."
