Luxor in Egypt is renowned for its great historic sites but now a special school is making its own bit of history.

The Thebes Project is a special school set up by Joyce Bishop and Anne Connor of Blackburn and aims to help children with physical and mental disabilities.

Whilst on their holiday to Luxor six years ago Joyce realised there was no provision in the Education System for children with such educational needs. She set about raising as much money as possible and now more than 100 children regularly attend the two centres in the area.

And it was this hard work and determination which prompted Tariq Malik and Nargis Akhtar to volunteer and see where the money they raised through a dinner and dance was going.

Nargis told us, "There was nothing in the region until Joyce and Anne decided to take it upon themselves to set establish the centres.

"The government does not provide for children with physical and mental disabilities and this is the only outlet they have."

"We were both touched by not only Joyce and Anne's hard work but also the locals who were fantastic."

"We managed to raise £1,500 and took over two computers donated by nochex.com when we visited the centres."

The charity, which was registered only weeks ago, has Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz in Coronation Street as its patron.

Joyce Bishop said, "We rely heavily on fundraising and it costs £550 a month to keep the centres running. We ensure both centres are run by locals.

"When myself and Anne first decided to set up the centres it was difficult but the local families have been very receptive. After several visits we noticed there were more and more children with nowhere else to go."

Joyce added, "Nargis and Tariq were both brilliant and got on with the kids really well."
