Snooker legend Davis to visit Chorley youth scheme

Snooker legend Steve Davis will personally present the prizes at a snooker competition aimed at encouraging Chorley youngsters off the streets this winter.

Organised by Lancashire County Council's Young People's Service and Lancashire Constabulary, this six-week programme starts on Friday, February 12 at Clayton Green Leisure Centre.

The programme can accommodate 30 participants and is open to all young people aged between 11 and 18 from Coppull, Clayton, and Whittle, with transport provided from Coppull.

Free sessions will be held on Friday evenings between 9pm and 11pm.

The final will take place on Friday, March 26 when snooker legend Steve Davis will present the winners with their prizes.

Sergeant Chris Brooks from Coppull Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It’s not just about free snooker; it’s about giving young people something to do on a Friday night.

Professional snooker coaches will work with young people over the six Friday night sessions and this will culminate in the finals evening when the players will have the opportunity to play against former world snooker champion Steve Davis.

Young people will also compete for prizes including plasma screen TVs, iPods and GAME vouchers.

Every participant will also get given a free snooker cue and bag to keep for taking part.

County Councillor Mark Perks, cabinet member for young people, added: “This is an exciting project and I know similar evenings have already been very successful in other parts of the county. I am sure it will prove equally popular with young people in Chorley as it's a really positive activity for a Friday evening."

Anybody wishing to take part should contact Debs Cardwell or Janet Tomlinson at the Young People's Service on 01257 248900.
