Lancashire County Council's school meals have scooped a top environmental award.

Buying from local farmers, switching to free-range eggs and reducing delivery mileage saw the School Catering Service take home a trophy from the North West Business Environment Awards.

Emma Tweedie, food and procurement manager for the authority's commercial group, said: "The drive to make school meals healthier presented us with an opportunity to completely overhaul our business.

"Now our school meals are not only healthier for children, they are also better for the environment, animals and the local economy."
