Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle has taken his campaign for a jobs summit to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Mr Hoyle said he was keen to build on initiatives such as the car scrappage scheme to help people stay in work during the current economic downturn.
Mr Hoyle's planned jobs summit would bring together government, employers and trade unions to agree to create new jobs and protect people in work.
In particular Lindsay is keen to see the adoption of a short time working subsidy. He raised these points with the PM in the Commons.
He said: “We need to invest in people currently in work.
"Short time working subsidy schemes have been introduced in other countries and are successful in preventing further unemployment.
"While we need to do everything we can to help people back into work I believe we also need to invest in protecting jobs rather than paying out more money in unemployment benefit."
