HUNDREDS of mourners have paid their last respects to a Blackburn Rovers fan known as “the mascot”.

The club sent a floral tribute on behalf of the directors, players and staff to mark the funeral of pub landlord Robert Michael Miller, known as Andy.

Mr Miller, 78, who had a heart condition, collapsed after a bailiff came looking for payment on a £350 speeding fine.

Ironically, he was described as a man “who would have given his last penny to anyone” at Pleasington Crema-torium yesterday.

He died on January 6 after he was taken into Accrington town centre to find a cash point by a court appointed bailiff.

An investigation has been launched by the National Court Service after Jack Straw, Black-burn MP and justice minister, stepped in.

Rev Peter Goulding told the service: “Today we could have been standing here with just three people but instead we have come to applaud, respect and honour a man who just did something right.”

He said Mr Miller, a father of five who was married to Rose, was a “jack of all trades” with varying careers as a butcher, coalman, milkman, welder and landlord.

Rev Goulding added: “It was his time spent as a landlord where he found his niche. Rose tells me he was the kind of person who would give his last penny to anybody.

“He was a strong family man with an extraordinary passion for football. Blackburn Rovers was his undying passion.

“His name was ‘the mascot’ because everyone knew him. He’s been involved in training kids and coaching. His life was surrounded by some form of the game. He was a person who will be sadly missed.

“His son Mike tells me he would open his door to anybody whether it be a stray animal or person, that was the nature of him. He was like a local celebrity in many ways who had a thirst for life.”

Floral tributes left at the crematorium, included messages from his children.

Son Joshua wrote: “Miss you always. Keep an eye out for us and help us move the right way with our lives.”

The funeral was followed by an “evening of celebration” at his former pub, the Cabin End.
