Drivers are being confused by new road markings at a Chorley roundabout.

Recently painted traffic markings at the roundabout, near the Tesco supermarket in Foxhole Road, means the road has reduced from two lanes to one in the Chorley bound direction.

The changes, instigated by Lancashire County Council, have angered motorists who claim it has increased traffic congestion.

Barry Pearson, from Astley Village, claims the new chevrons which filter traffic into one lane, do not serve any purpose and could be dangerous.

He said: “I was surprised to see the changes. Travelling from Astley Village cars now back up way past Chancery Road at peak times, whereas when there were two lanes heading towards Chorley the flow of traffic was generally fine.

“It’s just so confusing, the new layout means to travel down Southport Road, drivers have to manoeuvre from the right-hand to left-hand lane further down which I’m sure increases the likelihood of accidents.” Jane Bartlett, from Greenside, Euxton, agreed saying: “It’s confusing and annoying as the traffic flow before was much better.

“Traffic now backs up through Euxton right down Balshaw Lane at busy times and people are forced to switch lanes with little notice.” Alan Capstick, of the county highways department, said: "This is a highway safety improvement scheme and the changes are designed to increase capacity on Southport Road and to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road.

"The changes will be reviewed."

i travel to work in chorley three times a week up balshaw lane after dropping my daughter at school in euxton. i can't understand why these new road markings were necessary. this area was always congested in the morning rush hour and the situation has been much worse since the new traffic measures came into effect. I am having to leave home ten minutes earlier every morning to be in time for work. as i am crossing the roundabout heading towards southport road i am terrified that someone who is not aware that the lanes have changed is going to hit me side on. I have seen several motorists ignoring the left hand arrow at the roundabout and carrying straight on to chorley in that lane anyway which is clearly dangerous to other drivers who are abiding by the new road markings. I don't see what the point of changing something that was not a big problem before. this has created yet more problems for chorley motorists

As usual another mess up.
I have driven through it and the new lay out is of the normal poor design (reducing traffic flow making it harder to navigate the junction act.)and as a cyclist I am most annoyed by the usual method of making cyclist the poorest thought of road users going. As some one who cycles about 100 miles a week the cycle tracks are useless and a complete waste of time never mind the tax I have paid.
