Police conducted more than 25 stop searches after ‘men fighting with weapons’ saw a dispersal order imposed.
Officers imposed the section 60 disposal order in Brierfield on Saturday night and into Sunday morning, which allows police to break up groups of two or more people, where they believe their behaviour is causing a nuisance, harassment or distress.
Over the weekend, police said that they conducted 27 stop searches, numerous vehicles were stopped and three vehicles were seized.
The disposal order was made following reports of anti-social behaviour in the town and ‘men with weapons’ earlier this week.
This comes just days after a disorder on May 9 when police were called to an assault in Manchester Road, Nelson before being called after a car crashed into a house just a few hours later.
A spokesperson for the police said: “We want to thank the community for their cooperation and reiterate that violent disorder of any kind will be taken seriously and dealt with.
“Our officers will remain in the area into next week, including specialist and mounted teams on visible patrols.
“If you have any concerns or want to speak to us, don't hesitate to approach our officers for a chat.”
