A YouTuber has been documenting run down and abandoned properties in Lancashire towns.

David Burnip, who goes by the name The Wandering Turnip on YouTube, recently took his camera to Burnley to try and understand why so many houses are being left unoccupied.

The 30-year-old from just over the West Yorkshire border in Hebden Bridge says his interest was first sparked when looking at house prices in his hometown and comparing them to similar properties just down the road.

“I’ve always been interested in house prices, be it at the top end of areas or the bottom end,” he said.

“I sometimes search Rightmove pretending I can actually afford to buy somewhere.

“When I saw the price difference between here and Burnley, I wanted to go film because I just couldn’t find any information about the areas online and was just interested. It turns out other people are as well.

“It’s very close to where I live, and people have always said that you can get houses cheap there. And in comparison, Hebden Bridge is silly expensive.

“Just a half hour drive away it becomes so cheap. That intrigued me.”

David described the reaction to the video, which amassed nearly 450,000 views and received more than 1,500 comments, as “pretty nuts”.

He added: “I thought people would be interested as everyone would like to own a house and everyone understands how hard it is to buy, so showing cheap houses and finding out reasons why really got people talking.”

David also took a trip to Blackpool, where he analysed the history of the popular holiday destination while highlighting the now many empty bed and breakfasts and other commercial properties.

He said: “I had great memories of the place as a kid and someone on Reddit posted some pictures of some abandoned hotels and that just interested me, so I went to see more.

“It was pretty crazy as to how many there were left derelict there.

“I’ve had people in their 80s get in touch about the glory days and also young people like myself who remember it from being a kid.

“A lot of people still love it, but everyone seems to be aware it has a problem.”
