AROUND 2,000 people revelled in the sunshine at Atherton Carnival today, Sunday

Residents lined the streets as a parade featuring a host of different vehicles, community groups and schools made its way through the town after setting off from Gloucester Street at noon.

The parade reached the site of the carnival, Meadowbank playing fields, where a variety of stalls were set up to raise funds for causes.

Among them were the Royal British Legion's Atherton branch, Lowton Operatic and Dramatic Society (LOADS) and The New Garrett Theatre Company.

For the first time this year, the family-friendly free event had the luxury of a stage which was lent to them by Wigan Council.

After a performance by bagpipers in front of the stage, the Wigan Ukulele Club entertained the audience before they were followed by a number of performances by dance groups.

Members of The New Garrett Theatre Company were next up and showcased their singing talent to the crowd that gathered.

Rock band The Three then took to the stage to perform a catalogue of classic songs.

Jimmy Bunting, of Briarcroft Drive, Atherton, praised the carnival committee which includes "hard-working ambassadors" Brian and Eileen Seddon.

He said: "They have both shown great leadership and worked tirelessly for the town of Atherton and the carnival today proved it. What a splendid community event.

"The parade itself was excellent and it all happened in glorious sunshine.

"Well done and long may it continue.

"I know from past experience just how much work and planning is involved."

Children's entertainment was on offer such as fairground rides, a climbing wall, a Punch and Judy Show, donkey riding and facepainting.

Famous characters including Spiderman and Darth Vader posed for pictures with young fans.
