AN elderly couple have been found dead after a house fire.

Police detectives have launched an investigation with Lancashire Fire following the incident in Chorley.

Officers were called by the fire service at around 8.50am to reports of a fire at an address in Devonport Way.

An elderly couple were found dead inside the property.

A post mortem examination will take place to try to establish the exact cause of death.

Police are working alongside the fire service to establish the cause of the fire.

At 1pm there were five police cars, a fire engine and a police forensic van at the scene.

Forensic officers could be seen removing bags of evidence from the semi-detached house which is directly opposite St James' CE Primary School.

Neighbours said they were 'shocked and upset' at today's events.

Frank Mercer, 78, has lived opposite the couple for more than 20 years.

He said: "They were a lovely, quiet, friendly couple.

"You couldn't wish for better neighbours.

"I'm very upset and shocked that they have both died.

"It's a terrible, tragic thing to happen."

Another neighbour, a 42-year-old man who did not wish to be named, said: "I looked out this morning and there was a lot of smoke coming from the house.

"It's so terrible that's it's led to such a terrible loss of life.

"I'd see the lady often, leaving with her trolley to go shopping in Chorley and she was always friendly."
