Following a report that a woman was sexually assaulted in Astley Park in Chorley police have confirmed they are no longer investigating the matter.

Police were called at 1.15am Monday, March 28 following reports a 21-year-old woman had been assaulted.

Detectives launched an investigation but following numerous inquiries they have established that no assault took place.

A police spokesman said they understood such reports can cause concern for the local community and thanked them for their support and co-operation.

They said they would like to re-assure them that they take all reports of this nature seriously.

Yesterday morning, both town centre entrances at Astley Park, Chorley were locked and sealed with police tape amid police activity.

At 8am, two police vans could be seen blocking the path close to the War Memorial at the town centre end of the park.

More police tape could be seen straddling the pathway near to the memorial.

Both the Queens Road and Park Road entrance were locked and sealed.
