A MAJOR road remains closed and under metres of water more than 10 days after it flooded.

The road under the West Coast Mainline railway at Euxton Lane, Chorley, close to the Bay Horse pub, resembles a lake after pumping equipment installed following similar problems in 2011 seemingly failed.

Residents have become frustrated and families face miles of detours to travel what would normally be few yards.

Videos have emerged of people using jet-skis and canoes on the new lake, which was created after the unprecedented rainfall on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Keiron McLaughlin, who lives nearby, said: “It is a ridiculous situation.

“The water level is so high that the water is nearly up to the Bay Horse car park.

“I saw two divers come from an insurance company with a recovery vehicle.

“They went in with tanks and wetsuits and established that there were two vehicles under the water.

“It is not only annoying for the people of Euxton but caused chaos on the roads when the schools and workers returned.”

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We are taking the matter of flooding at Euxton Lane in Chorley very seriously and we have scheduled engineers to go out on site to reduce the water levels and assess any damage to the pumps. In consultation with local-authority partners, we are exploring ways to reduce flooding in this location in the long-term.”

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: “We have reported the problem to Network Rail and put in place a signed diversion until the issue can be resolved.”
