A CHARITY set up by England striker Danny Ings during his time at Turf Moor has been held up as an example of how to involve disabled people in sport.

Burnley FC in the Community has been shortlisted for the disability rights award for the Danny Ings Disability Sports Project at the upcoming Football for Good Awards in London.

The project, which aims to include disabled young people in and around Burnley, is one of only three projects in the running for the category at the national awards ceremony.

Ings was inspired to set up the scheme after a picture of him handing his shirt to young fan Joe Skinner was published around the world.

He is currently out of action from playing with a knee injury after leaving the Clarets in the summer to sign for Liverpool.

The project is a finalist alongside Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s “Charlton Upbeats” project and Manchester City in the Community’s “One City Disability” project.

Neil Hart, CEO of Burnley FC in the Community, said: “As a charity, we are delighted to have been shortlisted for this fantastic category at the Football for Good Awards.

“We are extremely proud of the project and the work we do with disabled young people here in Burnley and the surrounding areas.

“It is a real testament to the work of the staff, the volunteers and, of course, Danny Ings himself that the project has been recognised in this way.”

Burnley FC in the Community is a self-financing, registered charity that currently delivers over 30 projects in Burnley and the surrounding areas.

Its mission is to “support communities, inspire communities and deliver change in communities.”

Its key themes of work include sports participation, education, health, social inclusion and community facilities.

It also hopes to be a self-financing, viable charity embedded within the ethos of the football club.

Alongside this shortlisting at the Football for Good Awards, Burnley FC in the Community are also nominated for two awards at the upcoming Northwest Football Awards on Monday, December 16.

The Football for Good Awards is at Old Billingsgate Vaults, London, on Wednesday, December 2.
