ALDI’S proposal for a second food store in Burnley is set to bring an ‘economic boost’ and 40 new jobs to a central area of the town.

The discount supermarket chain hopes to redevelop a site off Todmorden Road, on land currently occupied by an industrial unit, a car wash and a scrap metal business.

An existing store at Activeway would remain open.

Councillors from Burnley Council’s development control committee were expected to decide on the proposals tonight.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “We are encouraged by support we have received from the local community for our plans for a second food store in Burnley.

“A new store offers a great opportunity to increase local shopping choice and improve convenience for residents.

“The proposal will deliver a multi-million pound investment in the local area and create up to 40 new jobs.”

The proposals for the 1.5 acre site would involve demolishing the existing buildings and cleaing the scrap metal yard currently on the site to make way for the store and car park.

The plans include a car park for 90 vehicles.

Highways initially expressed concern the development would cause congestion at the Todmorden Road and Parliament Street mini-roundabout.
