THE striker who broke his leg during his debut for Bacup Borough is on the road to recovery.

Sylvester Yeboah, 27, suffered the horrific injury just seconds after coming on as a substitute against Cheadle Town last Saturday.

The semi-professional footballer is now recovering in Oldham Hospital – and he hopes to return to the game once his femur is fully repaired.

The powerful forward, who works for the Royal Bank of Scotland as a deputy manager, said: “I am feeling OK and I am getting there.

“The surgery was done on Sunday and they put a rod down the middle of the bone.

“The doctor said it would take two to three months for the bone to heal.

“I am hoping to return to play football and return to play for Bacup.”

Sylvester was forced to wait in agony for an ambulance for more than 90 minutes by the East Lancashire club’s stadium gate. The game was restarted and finished five-all.

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust has since apologised, saying he was considered not to be a priority at first as there were two cases of people not breathing and a suspected stroke victim in the area at the time.

Once it was established his condition was deteriorating the call was given a higher priority and an ambulance was dispatched.

But Sylvester is focusing on the way his friends, family and team-mates have rallied around.

He said: “I have had a lot of messages of support from the club, and from everyone really.

“I have got family who are coming over who will look after me when I get home.”

Meanwhile, the club is seeking a volunteer to help with advertising and sponsorship opportunities along with identifying new sources of income.

The role would suit someone with time to build relationships with local businesses and work closely with the business development director and financial director.
