A MOTHER swan who had recently hatched three cygnets has been savaged and killed by a dog in front of appalled witnesses in a park.

The female swan was attacked by a ‘lurcher or greyhound’ type dog by Birkacre Lodge within Yarrow Valley Country Park, Chorley.

The incident happened at around 12.45pm on Wednesday, on the bank of the lake, when the dog, which was off its lead, attacked the bird.

Witnesses told park rangers that the man with the dog then walked away from the stricken swan.

The park is council-owned and run and there were several families and other visitors around the lake, enjoying the half-term break.

The matter was reported to police and the council and a description of the dog’s owner was given to them.

A Chorley Council spokesman, said: “We were informed early on Wednesday afternoon that the female swan had been attacked.

“The RSPCA attended but unfortunately she was dead.

“Puncture wounds which appear to be dog bites were found on the swan’s back.

“The swan was nurturing three cygnets and it’s believed she may have been out of the water in order to protect her young.

“Wildlife officers are now monitoring the three cygnets and it is hoped they will be looked after by the male adult swan but if that is not the case the cygnets may be removed.

“We would urge those visiting the park to keep control of their dogs at all times.”

The pair of swans and their young cygnets had become popular at the park with dozens of regular visitors checking on their progress.

Janette Jones, who walks the perimeter of the lake regularly, said: “I was angry and upset when I found out.

“All us wildlife lovers are furious and are sickened to the core about the actions of this person and his dog.”

Lancashire police said the matter had been reported to them and that wildlife officers were making enquiries.
