The gothic Anglican parish church, which is now under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust because of its historic and cultural significance, has a flat-timber ceiling with 80 painted heraldic panels, mostly commemorating the families who contributed to its construction.
The aim of ‘A Light Shines in Darkness’ is to captivate a new audience to help create discussion and challenge them to look around the buildings – which are often overlooked and undervalued – in a different way.
The inspiration for the exhibition is light and darkness. The shafts of celestial light that once shone in the churches are to be replaced by the light of a projector, providing a new kind of illumination.
The event is a partnership between non-profit organisations Film and Video Umbrella and the Church’s Conservation Trust.
Film curator Mike Jones, said: “Whether you’re religious or not, you can’t help but be affected when you go into a place like this and soak up the atmosphere the architecture creates.
“They deserve to have a life in them and for people to have access to such special places.”
