THE Friends of Roe Lee Park group is currently compiling information and quotes to put together an ambitious lottery bid of up to £1m for a new extended playground and re-surfacing of the Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs).

Secretary of the group, Jason Walker will be carrying out a local consultation to collate evidence that the new playground is needed and wanted.

Jason said: “Roe Lee Park is a great public asset that has been used by the people of Blackburn since it was opened in 1923.

“Over the years, it has been well supported by the council but, given the level of cuts that the Council has suffered since 2010, iI is increasingly hard for the council to find the money needed to continue its investment in public spaces.

“The park however needs significant investment if it is going to continue to meet the needs of local residents and, therefore, the friends group have decided to propose applying for lottery funding for a new playground and resurfacing of the MUGAs.”

Councillor Phil Riley said: “The Friends of Roe Lee Park are a shining example of the way that volunteers can fill in the gaps caused by the government’s public spending cuts and they deserve every credit or their efforts in protecting the park for the local residents.

“I am happy to support their bid for additional funding, which will be used to further enhance this public space.”
