A SCHOOLGIRL, who made Christmas stars in honour of her beloved grandad to raise money for a hospice, has been described as a ‘role model’ by her school.
Megan Hackett, nine, from Longshaw Junior school wanted a way to thank the hospice after they cared for her grandad Charles Jackson, who died in, aged 69.
Mr Jackson, was universally known by the nick-name ‘Lucky’, so Megan called her creations, Lucky Stars.
She sold dozens via Facebook, with buyers pledging funds to East Lancashire Hospice.
Her mum, Lisa, said: “Megan wanted to remember him and raise some funds for the hospice who cared for him.
“Once she showed a picture of the Lucky Stars we were inundated with people wanting one. Demand was bigger than supply.
“It was a great effort by her and all her family are so proud of her.”
Hospice fundraiser Denise Gee visited Longshaw to pick up the cheque and singled out Megan during a special assembly which they talked about the hospice and how they needed to raise funds.
She surprised Megan by unfurling a giant cheque and she was given a round of applause by her classmates.
Deputy head at Longshaw, Jonathan Berry, said: “The school has strong links with many charities and the intitative and creativity Megan showed is an inspiration.
“She is a role model for the other pupils.”
