MORE than 800 people packed into Blackburn Cathedral to remember loved ones at a hospice’s Light up a Life event.

The East Lancashire Hospice event, which culminated with the switch on of the cathedral tree lights and all those attending lighting a candle, raised more than £20,000 for the charity. Those invited had made a dedication for lost family or friends.

During an emotionally charged but ultimately joyous event, little Toby and and Jack Glover and their grandma Shirley Speakman switched on the lights.

Toby, 10 and six-year-old Jack lost their mum Sarah Glover, age 36, in February when she died from cervical cancer. Sarah, from Darwen, left a legacy of love which has seen her family and friends become firm supporters and fundraisers for the hospice.

Also at the service were members of Blackburn Music Society sang Oh Holy Night and Jingle Bells, and there was an operatic performance of Ave Maria from Genevieve Turner of Stonyhurst College and children from Salesbury CE Primary also sang.

Denise Gee, from the hospice, said: “The evening was very emotional and filled with beautiful music, readings and poems.

“People were able to remember their loved ones in spectacular surroundings and begin the festive period with enjoyable carols. It was very moving to see Toby, Jack and Shirley switch on the lights after such a tragic time.”

Those attending received a card dedicated to their loved one and their name will appear in the Light Up A Life Book of Remembrance. Light up a Life also continues at the hospice and people can remember loved ones on an online gallery. Photographs can be sent to kimberley.hall@eastlancshospice.org.uk with LUAL in the subject line. Please include your name and the name of the person being remembered.
