AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a 12-year-old boy who sustained fatal injuries after falling from his motorbike.

A hearing at Burnley Coroners' Court heard that Logan, of Mayfield Avenue, Oswaldtwistle, had gone with his father, Edward Wood to Cowm Leisure, Whitworth, where he regularly took part in motocross riding.

Coroner’s officer Martin Hall told the inquest that Logan was riding a child’s motocross bike under his father’s supervision at the quarry, off High Barn Lane on Wednesday, October 1.

Mr Hall said: “At around 4.02pm Logan lost control of the bike while attempting a jump and disappeared from view.”

He added that Mr Wood had found his son lying on the ground away from his bike and his crash helmet had come off.

Logan, who was a pupil at Mount Carmel RC High School, Accrington, was taken to Fairfield Hospital, Bury, by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at Royal Blackburn Hospital and a pathologist’s report concluded the cause of death was chest injuries.

Last week in an emotional statement, Logan’s family said: "Our cheeky little monkey will always be remembered for his courage, wit, sense of humour, his love of life and all its adventures.

“He was tragically taken from us doing what he loved the most, riding his motorbike.”

It went on: “He was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”

Xavier Bowers, headteacher at Mount Carmel RC High School, said everyone at the school was ‘profoundly shocked’ and described Logan as an ‘outstanding boy’.

Lancashire police said officers were investigating the incident, and the Health and Safety Executive had been informed.

East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor adjourned the proceedings until Tuesday, December 16 to enable further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death to take place.
