A POLISH man took his own life less than a year after moving to East Lancashire, an inquest heard.

Michal Kasperek, 22, was found hanging at his mother’s house in Nelson and died two days later at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Beata Fraczek told the hearing at Burnley Magistrates Court that her son had ‘got into trouble’ in Poland before moving to England.

His girlfriend had been meant to follow him, but had let him down and Mr Kasperek, who worked at Woodheads abattoir in Colne, found himself ‘alone and very distressed’.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mrs Fraczek confirmed she had then come to England to be with her son, and found he had started using amphetamine and cannabis.

Coroner Richard Taylor, summarising her statement, said: “He was a hard worker, but that was until the last week before his death when he did not go into work every day. He missed Poland although you say in England, he had a lot of friends, but there were some who were not a very good influence on him.

“You say you did not realise before, but looking back he must have been seriously depressed.”

Mrs Franczek said her son, of Chapel House Road, Nelson, had threatened to commit suicide before, but after a while, the threats were not taken seriously because of how often they happened.

On the day Mr Kasperek hanged himself, June 29, he had gone round to his mother’s house because he kept some of his belongings there.

They both left when Mrs Franczek went out to the shops, but Mr Franczek climbed back in through a window.

Less than half an hour later, the police arrived and found him hanging.

Mr Taylor gave a conclusion that Mr Kasperek had taken his own life.

A pathologist gave a medical cause of death as hypoxic brain injury, multiple organ failure and hanging.

The coroner told Mrs Franczek: “It seems to me that your son was very troubled. You say in your statement that you yourself probably did not realise how depressed he actually was.

“The taking of the drugs that he did would not have made him any better.

“When I look at the evidence that you gave me, the threats to kill himself in the past, his depression, the fact that it appears he went straight back into the house almost as soon as you had left it all point to the inevitable conclusion that he took his own life.”
