AN INVESTIGATION is ongoing after a man received serious injuries to his feet after being struck by a train while on a railway platform.

British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses to help piece together how a man in his mid 30s was injured at remote Entwistle station.

It is understood the man had his legs over the edge of the platform at Entwistle, between Darwen and Bolton, when a train from Blackburn approached.

He suffered severe injuries to both feet.

Police said he was taken to the the Royal Preston Hospital, where he still believed to be undergoing treatment.

The incident happened just after 4pm on Wednesday at the ‘request stop’ where passengers can flag down trains to stop.

After emergency workers left, rail workers could be seen cleaning away blood from an area of the platform.

Replacement buses were laid on between Bolton and Blackburn during rush hour, while emergency services attended the incident.

Services between Bolton and Blackburn began running again around 6pm.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We’ve established that the man wasn’t on the tracks at the time of the collision but inquiries are continuing as what exactly happened.

“BTP and Lancashire Constabulary officers attended and spoke to the man at the scene and officers have also visited the hospital to talk to him.

“We are continuing to speak to witnesses to establish what happened and have reported the matter to the Royal Accident Investigation Branch.”
