Improvements to the rail network in Chorley which have caused disruption to passengers and motorists this summer will be finished on time.

Through train services to Preston, Manchester and Blackpool are set to resume on Monday, September 1 after six weeks of bus replacement services.

The major project has seen the lowering of the line at the 100-metre long Chorley tunnel, which will allow for the electrification of the line and quicker trains.

The historic Flying Arches just west of the tunnel are also being re-built, several years after they were dismantled during engineering works.

Although a limited day-time service has been running to Bolton and Manchester, there have been no trains between Chorley, Buckshaw, Leyland and Preston since mid-July.

Users can look forward to electric trains from December 2016.

A spokesman for Network Rail, said: “The work is progressing well and is on track to be completed on time.

“Along with lowering the track we have also been carrying out bank stabilisation work and bridge reconstructions, which are on track.

“We don’t like doing this but we felt that the summer was the only time the track could be partly closed.

“It is at the time when it is least used but there has still been a limited service.

“In the long term people can look forward to much quicker services provided by the rail companies.”

Harpers Lane has also been closed to through for several months as a rail bridge is rebuilt for the electrification.

That work is scheduled to be completed by November.
