Chorley Borough Council opposition group appoint new leader

The opposition group on Chorley Borough Council has elected a new leader.

Conservative councillors held a special meeting at Chorley Town Hall where they selected Mark Perks to replace Greg Morgan.

Coun Morgan who had taken the decision to step down as leader due to work commitments, but continues to represent Clayton and Whittle ward.

Coun Perks is a qualified primary school teacher and youth worker who has represented the Astley and Buckshaw since 2002 and has held various positions on the council.

He is also a member of Lancashire County Council and the Lancashire Combined Fire Authority.

Coun Perks said: “I would like to thank my Conservative colleagues in the group for giving me their unanimous support.

“I am honoured to have been given this position of responsibility and I will endeavour to serve both the town and party to the best of my ability.

“In becoming the opposition group leader it is important we hold the Labour administration to account on policies that fail residents' and offer an alternative, however I equally recognise that we must work with them on matters we have in common."

Deputy leader of the group, Coun Paul Leadbetter said: “I have enjoyed working with councillor Morgan as his deputy and recognise that his decision to step aside will not have been taken lightly.

“Mark will bring his own character to our group and I am confident that we will work well together on behalf of the people of Chorley.”
