Chorley Citizen: GREEN: Winners of the 2013 competition celebrate their success GREEN: Winners of the 2013 competition celebrate their success

The final call is being made for blooming good gardeners to enter the town’s annual garden competition.

This year’s event has seen Chorley Community Housing, Chorley Council, Birkacre Garden Centre and the Chorley and District Garden Society come together to find the best kept garden in the borough.

The lucky winners will share prizes totalling £1,000.

Mike Murphy, regional manager at CCH, said: “We have already had some cracking entries but know that there are a lot more people out there who need their hard work and dedication to be recognised.”

Entrants need to give their name and address as well as a photo of their garden.

The competition closes on Friday, June 27.

Entry forms are available from either CCH’s office at 32-34 St Thomas Road, the Civic Offices at Union Street or from Birkacre Garden Centre.

If you would like to receive an application form by post please call either 0845 505 3355 or 0300 111 1133. Or alternatively please e-mail your entries to info@adactushousing.co.uk.

Chorley and District Gardening Society have also brought more colour to the streets of Chorley, this time on the pavement close to the Gala Bingo.

An arrangement of half-barrel planters to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One, the plants were selected to reflect the poignancy of this date — rosemary for remembrance of those who died; the deep red of heucheras for the blood spilt; the silver leaf helichrysum for the innocence of the many who took part; and mahonia for hope.

Poppy seeds were scattered over the soil in the planters, watched by members of Royal British Legion.
