There will be a grand opening of Chorley’s newly restored Circular Walk on Saturday, May 24 from 10am.

The ten-year-old trail has benefited from £45,000 of improvement works funding through Lancashire Environmental Fund and secured by TCV, Chorley Council and the county council.

Work has been ongoing since November including resurfacing muddy paths, removing old boardwalks and installing new drainage in order to make the route easier and friendlier to walk on.

The circular ten mile route covers Astley Park, Chorley Town Centre, along the Leeds Liverpool Canal, Duxbury Woods, Yarrow Valley Country Park and Common Bank and back to Astley Park and has now been made more accessible and barrier free as stiles have been removed and kissing gates added along with new way marking.

There is also now a shorter route which aims to encourage more people to use the walk.

On Saturday there will be guided walks along the trail, children’s activities, face painting, dog tricks show, birds of prey, children’s treasure hunt, climbing wall and craft workshops.

A full timetable for the day is available from the events section at chorley.gov.uk.

Brian Allman of Chorley Ramblers said: “Chorley Circular Walk provides very quick access to parkland and woods. It is on several bus routes, and with very short walks available, it is pleasurable for all the family.

“The initial walk was devised in 1993 and has suffered some wear and tear which is why the upgrades and improvements were needed.

“I am looking forward to the re-launch festival next Saturday, and I’m sure there will be something for everybody to enjoy.”
