A new small supermarket which has recently opened in Leyland received more than 900 applications for just 11 new jobs.
When Tesco Express advertised the jobs earlier this year it led to a scramble from jobseekers for the full and part time positions.
Store manager Andrew Markillie and his team decided to recruit staff from the Leyland area to work in the store, on Turpin Green Lane.
Andrew, who has worked at Tesco for eight years, said: “The response to our recruitment process has been fantastic.
“As a store we are delighted to be creating additional jobs for our local community and for local people, helping them back into employment.
“I am thrilled with the new team and I am confident that we will provide the best possible service to our customers.
“We are delighted to be opening a Tesco Express store on Turpin Green Lane, and we look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”
Tesco Express are neighbourhood convenience stores averaging 200 square metres. They have seen a rapid expansion in recent years despite some opposition from retailers and nearby residents.
There are currently 1,537 in the country with the 1,000th store opened in July 2009.
Store opening hours will be seven days a week from 6am until 11pm.
