WORK has started to transform a derelict piece of land into new rented homes.

The prominent site on Hodder Avenue, was formerly the Douglas House sheltered accommodation which was demolished some years ago.

Building form Southdale is to create 24 new homes in a £1.8million redevelopment to include 14 apartments, eight houses and two bungalows.

When built the home will be managed by Chorley Community Housing.

Southdale will use the project to create workshops on site for 15 students to learn more about the construction industry and three work experience places will be created.

The project will also safeguard four apprenticeships.

Neil Hughes, project manager at Southdale, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to regenerate this site and create high quality, affordable homes for local people.

“The creation of educational opportunities for young people in Chorley is something we are very excited by, because supporting the communities in which we work is something upon which we pride ourselves.”

Coun Terry Brown, who oversees housing for Chorley Council, said: “This site has been derelict for many years now and because of its prominent location off Moor Road we’ve been keen to see it redeveloped to not only improve the area for local residents, but also to create new homes at affordable rents for local people.

“It’s one of a number of pockets of land across the borough which have become derelict over the years that we’ve made available and we are working with CCH and Adactus to clear the sites and provide the much-needed homes.”
