A man has been jailed for stealing more £5,500 worth of items from a house in Leyland.

Brian Welsh, 53, of Riverside Road, Penwortham was sent to prison for 12 months after being found guilty of burglary at Preston Crown Court.

Welsh committed the burglary at an address on Farington Gate, Leyland between June 30 and July 6, 2013, when he knew that the home owner was away on holiday.

He managed to get hold of the house key from the homeowner’s aunt who was looking after it whilst her niece was away and was unaware that he had stolen it. With this, he gained entry through the back door.

Gold jewellery, including a wedding and engagement ring, £300 cash and electrical items were stolen, to the total value of £5,615. It is believed that Welsh sold them on to pay off drugs-related debt.

Some of the jewellery has been recovered and returned to the victim by officers after it was found in Welsh’s car following his arrest.

Speaking after sentencing, DC Hanif Patel from Leyland CID said: “This was a planned and calculated burglary in which Welsh took advantage of having access to the house key, seeing it as his entry to the house where he took sentimental and electrical items worth thousands.”
