Nearly 100 people attended the launch of Lancashire Library's Local and Community History Month 2008 which took place at Chorley Central Library recently.
Seventy five people including the Deputy Mayor of Chorley, Terry Brown and county council Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, Councillor Chris Cheetham, attended the launch on May 9.
Theme of the event was the celebration of 60 years of the NHS with a programme of talks.
A talk entitled Initial Injection, by Barry Lowe RIBA retired county architect and Ken Strang RGN DMS, traced the history of the hospitals and health services in Chorley.
A Herbal Medicine talk, by Sheila Cronin who is trained in herbal medicine, included Culpepper and early herbal medicine.
Professor Wroblewski, consultant hip surgeon from Wrightington Hospital, near Chorley, gave a talk on hip replacement and the continued development of the artificial hip.
Organisers have hailed the event a "huge success" and further talks are planned.
Displays of medical equipment from Lancaster Medical Museums are on show in the foyer and reference library at Chorley Library until the end of May.
The next event at Chorley Library is on June 13 when local historian MD Smith will be giving a talk on local health, local history and North West Sound Archive will be in attendance to record memories of the health service.
