I write in response to the letter Community not cash, Citizen, December 10, and regarding the Christmas lights switch-on in Chorley.
I would like to thank DA Ross for being a 'local council taxpayer'. Does this person think everything that is paid for in Chorley comes directly out of his or her pocket?
I too am a 'local council taxpayer' and also self-employed.
The synthetic ice rink was described as 'a 9m x 8m synthetic ice rink that could only locate on Cleveland Street and diversions were put in place to accommodate the deliveries to shops’.
And guess what? It worked.
The rink was described as a 'paltry' excuse for an ice rink which cost tax payers £8,000.
The paltry excuse for an ice rink is actually a synthetic ice rink that offers a top quality ice skating alternative to real ice and is actually used by Disney on Ice and other top shows.
The £8,000 referred to is very far fetched indeed.
A real ice skating rink would cost £65,000 plus vat, plus £8,000 in diesel to run the generator that freezes the ice rink.
I would advise the letter writer to do the homework and get the facts correct before writing to the Citizen.
I would have expected a retired person to be a little more grown up regarding entertainment like this for the community of Chorley.
