Blackburn bride stars on My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding TV show

A BLACKBURN bride and her incredible 27-stone wedding dress were featured on a prime-time TV show last night.

Sammy Jo Young told the producers of Channel 4’s Cutting Edge: My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding that having a 20ft-long train was ‘an absolute must’.

Sammy Jo, 21, who was living at a travellers’ site in Blackburn at the time of the wedding in August last year, said many brides from the travelling community compete to have the most outrageous dresses.

Sammy Jo married childhood friend Ely, 25, at a Blackburn church.

They then held the reception for 200 people at the Pines Hotel near Chorley.

The couple, who were one of four weddings featured on the TV show, now live at a site in Preston.

Yet another piece of bad reporting or lazy reporting, if her dress weighed 27 stone I'd have been amazed, as it was a fitted dress and not one of the flamboyant ones on the show. BTW it looked very nice also, and good luck to both of them.

The woman who made the dress said they can weigh up to 27 stone, but it was never mentioned that this one did.

She didn't look so chuffed by the end of the programme, did she? Bless her.

Amazing what you can afford when you've no taxes to pay, though.

This was a great piece of reporting, showing different cultures. Sometimes we don't realise what wonderful people our Gypsy friends can be, I loved the comment from the dress maker stating that gypsies are just like everyone else, there are good and bad ones but to stick them all with the same brush is totally unfair. They aren't all out to rip you off and pay no taxes!
And actually the ones I've met do pay taxes and seem genuinely nice people.
They can afford these lavish weddings because they save, they live a cheaper way of living than most people and most importantly they see marriage as permanent!! They're only doing it once and it is a dream affair, maybe we should learn from this culture and compare it to ours?

Er, Minty, it says in the story that the Blackburn girl's train was 20-foot long. I suspect this accounted for most of the 27 stones, not her fitted dress.

Can't see a 20ft train weighing 27 stone? It didn't look like she was having difficulty walking with it either. Neither did the people loading it into the wedding car! If you had watched the program you would have known AccyDave!

Travellers aren't Gypsys, yet another incorrect stereotype. Travellers are the 'chavs' Gypsys are the bloodline!
But never mind thanks to reporting like this and whatever Channel Four show that is no one can tell the difference anymore!

maybe these weddings should be state funded and encouraged to last for at least a month at a time. At least then the police would know where they all where!
and we mock burnley!
