Robert Pattinson and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini have become the latest celebrities to take up the Ice Bucket challenge.

The craze involves tipping a bucket of ice and water over your head to raise awareness for ALS, the US charity that supports research into motor neurone disease.

Big screen heartthrob R-Patz joined the growing list of celebrities to drench themselves in ice after a nomination from Hollywood pal Zac Efron, but he didn't suffer for too long as he had just a small saucepan of ice tipped over him - although a friend followed it up with a soaking by pointing a hose at him.

The Twilight star went on to nominate actors Guy Pearce and Mia Wasikowska and rocker Marilyn Manson to have a go next.

Meanwhile, Cheryl got in on the action after being nominated by fellow X Factor judge Simon Cowell, and in her video, new husband Jean-Bernard is seen throwing icy water over her as she says to Simon: "I hope you're happy!"

Cheryl nominated One Direction's Liam Payne, her Girls Aloud bandmate Nicola Roberts and TV host Piers Morgan.

Simon had also nominated his other fellow X Factor judges Mel B and Louis Walsh, and the Spice Girl was quick to take up the challenge while a crowd chanted "ice up your life".

Nashville actress Hayden Panettiere took the opportunity to officially confirm her pregnancy in her ice bucket video, by saying: "I nominate my unborn child," while Jessica Biel included her mum and grandma in a triple soaking for hers.

Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth wore a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles onesie for his ice bucket challenge, while Verne Troyer swapped water for milk when it was his turn in recognition of California's current drought.

Other celebrities to have taken part most recently include Gwyneth Paltrow, Dave Grohl, Sarah Jessica Parker and Lindsay Lohan, who was dunked with ice on Jimmy Fallon's talk show.
