Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married at the weekend in Correns, France, according to a spokesman for the couple.

The Hollywood stars wed on Saturday in a small chapel in a private ceremony attended by family and friends at Chateau Miraval.

In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Brad and Angelina obtained a marriage licence from a local California judge, who also conducted the ceremony in France.

The couple's children took part in the wedding. The actress walked down the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox and Pax, while daughters Zahara and Vivienne threw petals. Their remaining offspring, Shiloh and Knox, served as ring bearers, the spokesman said.

The A-listers finally tied the knot after months of rumours about their nuptials.

Brad said previously of getting hitched: "I am getting more pressure from my kids, and it is something I want to do within their lifetime, but I also feel like the time has come."

This is the second marriage for Brad, who wed Jennifer Aniston in 2000. They divorced in 2005.

Angelina was previously married to British actor Jonny Lee Miller for three years in the late '90s and to Billy Bob Thornton for three years before divorcing in 2003.

Brangelina met on the set of their 2005 film Mr And Mrs Smith, in which they played married assassins. At the time, Brad was married to Jennifer but has always denied allegations of cheating.

The couple became parents to adopted children Maddox and Zahara before the birth of their first biological child, Shiloh, in 2006.

The following year, the Tomb Raider star and Fight Club heart-throb adopted son Pax, then aged three, from Vietnam. In 2008, their second and third biological children, twins Vivienne and Knox were born at a hospital in Nice, France.

Last year, the couple spoke of their close relationship after Angelina, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress in Girl, Interrupted, announced in a New York Times article that she had had a preventative double mastectomy.

Brad described the decision, made because she carried the "faulty" gene BRCA1 which sharply increases her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, as "absolutely heroic".

In the article, Angelina wrote: ''I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive.

''So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition.

''Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Centre, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries.

''We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.''

Earlier this year, committed humanitarian Angelina was awarded an honorary damehood (DCMG) for services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end war zone sexual violence.

On receiving the award, she said: "To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.

"Working on the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative and with survivors of rape is an honour in itself.

"I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."
